A drill is often bought for one job – putting up a shelf, assembling furniture or replacing a loose bracket – then quickly becomes one of the most useful tools in the house. The corded vs cordless drill question comes down to where you will use it, what you need it to drill into and how often it will come out of the cupboard.

For most everyday household jobs, a cordless drill offers the simplest starting point. A corded model still earns its place when sustained power, heavier work or a tighter budget matters more than portability. Buying the right one means avoiding a tool that is either underpowered for the job or far more expensive than you need.

Corded vs cordless drill at a glance

A corded drill runs from a mains socket, so it delivers consistent power for as long as it is plugged in. It is usually lighter in the hand for its power level because there is no battery pack attached. The trade-off is obvious: you need a nearby socket or an extension lead, and the cable can be awkward on ladders, in gardens or around a busy workspace.

A cordless drill runs from a rechargeable battery. It can go anywhere, from a garden shed to the far end of a room before the carpet is down. It is convenient, quick to pick up and generally the better choice for routine drilling and screwdriving. However, battery capacity, charging time and the cost of spare batteries all need consideration.

When a cordless drill is the sensible choice

For most homes, a cordless combi drill is the practical all-rounder. It drills holes in timber, plasterboard, plastic and light metal, while its clutch setting helps drive screws without stripping their heads or sinking them too deep. That makes it useful for flat-pack furniture, curtain poles, cabinet handles, fence repairs and small DIY jobs that crop up over the year.

The lack of a cable matters more than it first seems. You can take it into the loft, work outside, fit a shed latch or tackle a quick repair without clearing space near a socket. If the job takes ten minutes, finding an extension lead can take nearly as long.

Look at battery voltage before assuming bigger is always better. A 12V drill is compact and comfortable for light indoor work, especially if you mainly assemble furniture or hang pictures. An 18V drill is the common choice for broader DIY use, offering more torque for larger screws, tougher timber and occasional masonry drilling with the hammer setting. It may be heavier, so it is worth holding one if possible before buying.

Battery size is shown in amp hours, or Ah. A 2.0Ah battery is usually enough for short jobs and keeps the drill lighter. A 4.0Ah battery provides longer runtime but adds weight and cost. For occasional home use, one battery can be enough if you remember to charge it. If you use the drill regularly or have a larger project planned, two batteries are far less frustrating: one can charge while the other is in use.

Cordless drills also make better screwdrivers than corded drills for most people. Variable speed, a forward and reverse switch, and an adjustable clutch give more control when fitting hinges, securing brackets or driving screws into timber. A set of suitable screwdriver bits and drill bits is just as useful as the drill itself.

When a corded drill is better value

A corded drill is a strong choice for jobs that need continuous, reliable power. If you are drilling many holes in masonry, mixing small amounts of plaster or paint with a paddle attachment, or working through dense material for an extended period, there is no battery to run down or recharge.

This can be especially useful during a full room refresh. Drilling repeated holes for battens, shelves, curtain tracks or fixings soon uses battery power, particularly when working into brick. A mains drill keeps going at the same pace, provided you use the correct bit and safe cable management.

Corded drills often offer more power for the money. If your budget is limited and the drill’s main role is drilling rather than driving screws, a basic corded hammer drill can be an economical option. The money saved can go towards quality masonry bits, wall plugs, screws and other essentials needed to finish the job properly.

There are limits. A mains cable can snag, create a trip hazard and restrict movement. Never work where the cable could be cut, trapped or exposed to water. Use a suitable extension lead when needed, keep connections dry and avoid trailing leads across doorways or walkways.

Choose the drill type for the material

The material matters as much as the drill itself. Timber and plasterboard are straightforward with either a corded or cordless drill, using sharp general-purpose or wood bits. For screws, pre-drilling a pilot hole in hardwood can prevent splitting and makes driving easier.

Brick and blockwork need a masonry bit and usually a hammer action. A cordless 18V combi drill can handle occasional holes for light to medium fixings, such as a mirror, rail or shelf bracket. Hard engineering brick, concrete and repeated large holes are more demanding. A corded hammer drill is better suited to longer runs of work, while an SDS drill is the right tool for particularly hard masonry or larger holes.

Metal calls for a suitable HSS bit, steady pressure and a controlled speed. Start slowly so the bit does not wander. Avoid forcing the drill: excessive pressure creates heat, wears the bit and can make a neat hole harder to achieve.

Before drilling into any wall, check for pipes and electrical cables. Use a detector where appropriate, avoid drilling directly above or below sockets and switches, and take extra care near kitchens and bathrooms. No drill choice makes an unsafe drilling position safe.

Features worth paying for

Do not judge a drill by voltage alone. For a household tool, a keyless chuck is useful because bits can be changed quickly without a separate chuck key. A 10mm chuck suits many light jobs, while a 13mm chuck accepts larger bits and is more versatile for general DIY.

A hammer function is worthwhile if you may drill into brick. If you only expect to work with furniture, timber and plasterboard, it is not essential. A clutch with multiple settings is more valuable for regular screwdriving, as it reduces the risk of damaging a surface or overdriving a screw.

A built-in work light is handy inside cupboards and under worktops, but it should not be the deciding factor. More useful is a comfortable grip, a trigger that responds smoothly and a battery platform that fits other tools you may want later, such as an impact driver, hedge trimmer or sander.

It is also worth checking what is included. Some cordless drills are sold as a bare tool, meaning the battery and charger are separate. This can be good value if you already own compatible batteries, but it is not a ready-to-use purchase for a first-time buyer. Check the box contents before adding to basket.

Plan the full job, not just the drill

A drill alone will not secure a shelf or repair a gate. For a typical wall-fixing job, you may also need the right drill bit, wall plugs matched to the wall type, screws of the right length, a tape measure, pencil, spirit level and safety glasses. A mixed basket of these small essentials saves a second trip when the job is already underway.

For light plasterboard fixings, standard wall plugs may not be suitable, particularly for heavier loads. Choose a fixing designed for plasterboard, and locate a stud where the item and wall construction require it. For masonry, match the plug size to the drill bit and screw. The packaging normally states the compatible sizes.

Keep drill bits sharp and replace worn screwdriver bits. A rounded bit slips in screw heads, while a blunt drill bit makes the tool work harder than it should. These low-cost consumables often make more difference to the finished result than stepping up to a more powerful drill.

The practical choice for your home

Choose a cordless drill if you want one flexible tool for everyday repairs, furniture assembly, outdoor fixes and occasional holes in brick. An 18V combi drill with a battery, charger, clutch and hammer setting is a sensible all-round specification for many UK homes.

Choose a corded drill if you expect sustained masonry drilling, frequent heavier tasks or simply want the most drilling power for your budget. It is less convenient, but dependable mains power can be exactly what a larger project needs.

If you are buying your first drill, think about the jobs waiting at home rather than the biggest number on the box. A comfortable drill, the correct bits and the right fixings will get more jobs finished than extra power you rarely use.
