A lawnmower stopping halfway down the garden is frustrating. A damaged or unsuitable lead can be far worse. If you are asking what extension lead for garden work to buy, start with one rule: use an extension lead made for outdoor use, with an RCD for added protection.

Garden electrics deal with damp grass, rain showers, muddy shoes and cables pulled across paths. The cheapest indoor extension block might look convenient, but it is not designed for these conditions. Choosing the right lead is a small job that makes mowing, hedge trimming and outdoor DIY safer and easier.

What extension lead for garden work should you choose?

For most UK gardens, an outdoor extension reel or outdoor extension lead with a weather-resistant socket and built-in RCD is the sensible choice. Look for a product clearly described as suitable for outdoor use, rather than relying on a standard indoor multi-socket lead.

An RCD, short for residual current device, cuts the electrical supply quickly if it detects a fault. It does not make unsafe equipment safe, and it is not a reason to use a lead in standing water. It does, however, provide a valuable extra layer of protection when working outdoors. Some outdoor leads have an RCD built into the plug; others use an RCD adaptor between the wall socket and the extension lead.

The socket end should have a protective cover that closes around the plug connection. A rating such as IP44 is common on outdoor electrical accessories and indicates protection against splashing water from any direction. It is suitable for normal garden use, but it is not waterproof enough to leave in a puddle or exposed outside all year.

Choose the right cable length before buying

Measure from the indoor socket you will use to the furthest point where you expect to work. Follow the route the cable will actually take around doors, patios and flowerbeds, rather than measuring in a straight line. Then allow a little extra slack so the plug connections are never under tension.

A 10-metre lead can be enough for a compact patio or front garden. A 15- or 20-metre lead suits many average gardens, while a 25-metre or longer reel may be needed for a long lawn. Bigger is not always better. An excessively long cable is heavier to manage, creates more trip risk and takes longer to wind away properly.

Avoid joining several short extension leads together to gain distance. Every extra plug-and-socket connection is another point where moisture can enter or where a loose connection can overheat. One correctly rated outdoor lead is the safer, tidier option.

Keep voltage drop in mind on long runs

Very long or lightweight cables can reduce the power reaching a high-demand tool. In practical terms, a mower may struggle, or the cable may warm up more than expected. This matters most with longer leads and equipment with a powerful motor, such as a lawnmower, pressure washer or electric saw.

For regular heavy garden jobs, choose a substantial outdoor cable and check the manufacturer’s maximum load. Do not assume all 25-metre reels have the same capability. The label should state the maximum wattage or amps when the cable is fully unwound.

Extension reel or trailing socket?

An extension reel is usually the best all-round answer for lawnmowers, hedge trimmers and larger gardens. It stores the cable neatly, lets you select a useful length, and often includes several sockets. Choose a reel with thermal cut-out protection and an RCD if possible.

A trailing socket lead can be better for a short, regular task such as powering a pond pump, outdoor lights during a dry setup, or a small tool near the house. It is less bulky than a reel and quicker to put away. The key point is the same: it must be rated for outdoor use, have a covered socket, and be long enough without stretching.

Multiple sockets are handy, but they are not an invitation to run every garden appliance at once. A mower, pressure washer and electric heater can quickly exceed the lead’s rating. For one high-powered tool, a single-socket outdoor lead is often the clearest and safest arrangement.

Always unwind a cable reel fully for powerful tools

This is one of the most missed checks. A cable left wound on its reel can overheat when supplying a high electrical load. The coil holds in heat, particularly on warm days or when the reel is sitting on grass.

For a lawnmower, hedge trimmer, pressure washer or other motor-driven equipment, unwind the cable fully before use. Check the reel label too. Many reels show one maximum load when fully wound and a much higher maximum when fully unwound. Follow the lower rating unless the cable is completely unwound.

If the lead, plug or socket feels hot, switch off at the mains, unplug it and allow it to cool. Do not continue using a lead that repeatedly becomes hot, has a burning smell, or trips its thermal cut-out. Replace it if there is any doubt.

Match the lead to the tool’s power rating

Before connecting anything, check the wattage on the tool’s rating label or instructions. Most domestic garden tools use a standard UK 13A plug, but their power demands vary. A small strimmer may draw far less power than a pressure washer, for example.

A 13A extension lead should never be asked to supply more than its stated maximum load. As a broad guide, 13A at 230V is around 3,000 watts, but the product label is the figure to follow. It may state a lower limit when used on a reel or when multiple sockets are in use.

Do not plug an extension lead into another extension lead, and do not use one to supply a permanent outdoor installation. If you regularly need power at the far end of the garden, a qualified electrician can advise on a proper outdoor socket or fixed supply. That costs more upfront, but it is more practical than running a cable across the lawn every weekend.

Set up the lead safely in the garden

Start by checking the whole cable before each use. Look for cuts, crushed sections, exposed inner wires, loose plugs, cracked sockets or signs of scorching. Garden cables get caught in shed doors, nicked by tools and damaged by pets more often than people realise. A taped-up cable is not a safe repair – take it out of use and replace it.

Keep connections off the ground and away from wet areas. The plug between your indoor socket and the lead should remain indoors and dry. Outside, place the socket connection on a dry surface where it will not sit in long grass, a puddle or a plant pot tray. If rain becomes heavy, stop work and disconnect the equipment.

Route the cable where you can see it. Keep it away from the cutting path of a mower or trimmer, and avoid running it across doorways, driveways and busy paths. When mowing, start close to the power source and work away from it. Keep the lead behind you or over one shoulder so it stays clear of the blade.

Do not use outdoor electrical equipment while barefoot, and avoid working in wet conditions. Wear suitable footwear with a good grip. These simple habits matter just as much as the IP rating on the socket.

Once the job is done, switch off at the wall, unplug the tool, then unplug the extension lead. Wipe off mud or moisture before winding it away loosely. Store it in a dry shed, garage or cupboard, out of direct weather and away from sharp tools.

A good outdoor extension lead should make garden jobs simpler, not something you have to worry about. Buy for the distance, power rating and conditions you actually have, use the RCD every time, and you can get on with the mowing while the weather holds.
