A dripping threaded fitting can turn a quick repair into a repeated trip under the sink. PTFE tape is a low-cost plumbing essential that can help seal threaded joints properly, but only when it is used on the right type of connection and wrapped in the correct direction. Knowing how to use PTFE tape means less guesswork, fewer leaks and less chance of having to take the fitting apart again.
What PTFE tape does – and does not do
PTFE tape, often called plumber’s tape or thread seal tape, is a thin white tape used on threaded pipe and fitting connections. It fills the tiny gaps between threads and helps the fitting tighten smoothly. It is commonly used on shower arms, radiator valves, tap connectors, outdoor taps and other threaded plumbing fittings.
It does not replace a washer, rubber seal or olive. If a connection seals by compressing a washer or an olive, adding tape to the thread will not cure the problem. In some cases, it can stop the fitting tightening as it should.
A useful rule is simple: use PTFE tape where two threads screw together and the thread itself forms part of the seal. Do not use it on compression fittings, push-fit connectors or hose connections that rely on a flat rubber washer.
Choose the right tape for the job
Standard white PTFE tape is suitable for many domestic water fittings. It is inexpensive and worth keeping in a plumbing or DIY drawer alongside spare washers, olives and a small adjustable spanner.
Tape is also sold in different thicknesses and for specific jobs. A thicker, denser tape can be easier to handle on larger threads or fittings with looser tolerances. Gas-rated tape is usually yellow, but this does not make gas work a general DIY task. Work on fixed gas appliances and pipework must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. For drinking-water fittings, use a tape that is clearly suitable for potable water.
The width matters too. Narrow tape is easier on small tap tails and compact fittings, while wider tape can cover larger pipe threads more quickly. For ordinary household plumbing, standard-width white tape is usually all that is needed.
Before you wrap the thread
Turn off the water supply if you are working on a live plumbing connection. Open the tap afterwards to release any remaining pressure, and keep a towel or shallow container nearby for the water left in the pipe.
Take the fitting apart and inspect both sets of threads. They should be clean, dry and free from old tape, jointing compound, grit or damaged metal. Old tape left in the thread can create an uneven seal, while cross-threaded or badly worn fittings may need replacing rather than taping over.
Check how the connection seals before reaching for the tape. A typical compression fitting has a nut and olive around the pipe. It needs a sound olive and correctly cut pipe, not PTFE tape around its thread. Likewise, a flexible tap hose normally seals against the fitting face with a rubber washer inside the nut.
How to use PTFE tape correctly
The direction of the wrap is the part most likely to catch people out. The tape must be wrapped in the same direction that the fitting will turn as it is tightened. For most right-hand threads, when you are looking directly at the end of the male thread, this means wrapping clockwise.
If you wrap it anti-clockwise, the tape can unravel or bunch up as you screw on the fitting. It may look fine before assembly, then pull loose just when the threads need to seal.
Follow these steps for a neat, reliable wrap:
- Hold the male threaded fitting so the open end faces you. Leave the first thread or two clear of tape. This helps the fitting start cleanly and reduces the chance of loose tape entering the pipework.
- Place the tape against the thread and pull it gently taut. Start wrapping clockwise, following the direction of the thread rather than laying the tape straight across it.
- Overlap each turn by around half the tape width. Keep the tape smooth and seated in the thread grooves, without twisting it into a thick cord.
- Apply roughly four to six wraps for a typical small domestic fitting. Larger, coarser or slightly loose threads may need a little more, while fine threads may need less. The aim is a snug, even layer, not a bulky coating.
- Tear the tape cleanly and press the loose end into the thread. Run a finger around the fitting to make sure no flap is hanging over the opening.
- Screw the fitting together by hand first. It should engage smoothly. If it feels crooked, tight immediately or refuses to start, stop and check for cross-threading rather than forcing it.
Once the fitting is hand-tight, use the appropriate spanner or grips to tighten it only as far as necessary. Metal threads can be damaged by overtightening, particularly on brass fittings. Plastic threaded fittings need even more care, as too much force can crack the fitting or strip the thread.
How much PTFE tape should you use?
There is no single number of turns that suits every fitting. Thread size, tape thickness and the condition of the fitting all make a difference. Four to six wraps is a sensible starting point for many 1/2-inch and 3/4-inch plumbing fittings, but the finished layer should still allow the parts to screw together without excessive force.
Too little tape may leave gaps and allow water to seep along the thread. Too much tape can make the fitting bind before it reaches its proper position. It can also put extra stress on female fittings, especially plastic ones. If you need to use a great deal of tape to make a joint feel secure, the fitting may be the wrong size, damaged or not designed to seal on the thread.
With tapered threads, the fitting becomes tighter as it screws in, and PTFE tape helps fill the remaining space. With parallel threads, the seal may depend on a washer or bonded seal instead. This is why identifying the fitting type matters more than automatically wrapping every thread you see.
Common PTFE tape mistakes
The most common mistake is wrapping in the wrong direction. The tape should tighten into the thread as the fitting is turned, not unwind from it. Starting too close to the end of the pipe is another frequent problem, as loose fragments can be pushed into the waterway and may affect a valve, aerator or cartridge later on.
Using tape on a compression joint is equally unhelpful. If a compression fitting leaks, check that the pipe is cut square, fully inserted and free from deep scratches. A damaged olive, a distorted pipe or an overtightened nut is more likely to be the cause.
Avoid using PTFE tape as a repair for a cracked fitting, a split plastic connector or a badly corroded thread. Tape can assist a sound threaded joint, but it cannot restore failed parts. Replacing a small fitting is often the quicker and more dependable option.
Testing the joint after fitting
Turn the water back on gradually, then dry the outside of the fitting with a cloth. Watch the joint for a few minutes and run the connected tap or appliance if relevant. A dry fitting is a good sign, but check again after it has been under normal pressure for a little while.
If a threaded joint still weeps, do not simply tighten it harder. Turn off the supply, take the joint apart, remove every trace of old tape and inspect the threads. Reapply fresh tape in the right direction, or replace the fitting if the threads are damaged.
For a small roll that takes up almost no space, PTFE tape earns its place in every household repair kit. Keep it beside your basic tools, spare seals and a cloth, and the next threaded plumbing job should be a straightforward fix rather than a slow leak waiting to happen.
